The arms of the town Bussum

" In azure 5 golden buckwheat grains, placed crosswise, of which the four in the corners of the shield are placed towards the hart of the shield, and the one in the hart pointed with the end towards the bottom of the scutcheon."

Origin/explanation:

The community had requested a crown with five leaves. The High Court of Nobility asked for (historical) data about the arms and especially why the community wanted to bear a crown. The community however could not hand in any historical data. In Van Ollefen and Bakker there was no mention of own arms for Bussum. The community had not handed in any request in 1814/5 and probably it didn't bear arms in those days. However, Van der Aa mentions arms with five grains of buckwheat. So it may well be established at the beginning of the 19th century. Because of the lack of historical data arms without a crown was granted.
Apart from that the story goes that the arms is based on that of Hilversum, to which the Bussumers felt superiour. (The scutcheon of Hilversum carries only four grains of buckwheat - bussum.net).

The Yuppie 'Burbs, Holland Style

On the wayward train ride to Amersfoort we saw a quaint little neighborhood called Naarden-Bussum (for the two cities of those names). The street facing the train tracks had some nice shops so we decided to spend a day in Naarden-Bussum.

The Neighborhood

Here is what the neighborhood looks like. Nicer than Duivendrecht. In fact, Bussum has its own BMW dealership. This is a yuppie town.

A Church

Just a short walk around the downtown area revealed
three or four churches, which of course is natural.

Lunch Outdoors

I had a very inexpensive (13,75 Dutch guilders, around $8US) and tasty lunch outdoors at the Brasserie Escoffier -- the red awning on the right. I took this picture to include the optick's sign, because my brother-in-law's name is De Groot. That's also our waitress on the left. It was sunny, warm, and we were saying to ourselves, "we could live here!"

Just Outside of Downtown...

We ran into this field and pond on our walk around town.

And McDonald's, too.

The reach of McDonald's is far.

Did you know . . .

8tapijten.gif (15774 bytes)that the hangings in de council-hall of pavilion Welgelegen (seat of the Council of North-Holland in Haarlem since 1930) are a gift to the province from the -in those days - 9 largest municipalities of North-Holland:  Amsterdam, Den Helder, Alkmaar, Zaandam, Bussum, Hilversum, Haarlemmermeer, Velsen, Hoorn? Each hanging bears the arms of the parish that gave the present. Each hanging was manifactureded in  Art Deco style and designed by Willem Arondeus. The manifacture was carried out by the weaving-mill J. F. Semey in The Hague. Willem Arondeus played an active part in the resistance during the Second World War and was publicly honoured for that in 1983 (with thanks to www.noord-holland.nl; translation bussum.net).
